Hitmen bring in local product
By SCOTT FISHER, SUN MEDIA

Giffen Nyren is coming home.

The Calgary Hitmen acquired the offensive defenceman yesterday from the Kamloops Blazers for a conditional 2010 sixth-round bantam draft pick.

The overage Calgary product said the move caught him off guard.

"I didn't see it coming," said Nyren, who will make his way to the Stampede City today.

"But it'll be nice to finish off my (junior) career in my hometown."

Nyren had 11 points in 25 games with the Blazers this season.

Hitmen GM Kelly Kisio said Nyren should make an impact.

"He's a good skater and moves the puck well," Kisio said.

"He should help us get the puck out of our end by getting it to the forwards."

Kisio said he doesn't plan to make any other immediate moves to trim his roster, which now sports 26 players.

"We've got a couple of guys who are banged up," Kisio said after placing forward Jessi Hilton on injured reserve.

BLAZERS BUSY

Blazers GM Craig Bonner had a busy day.

In addition to trading Nyren, he also acquired D Ryan Funk from Vancouver for F Brett Lyon.

Bonner also hired a new coach -- former Flames bench boss Guy Charron.

Charron was with the Flames from 1990-95.
