Stan Butler was fined $1,500 by the Ontario Hockey League for criticizing the referees following Game 4 of the OHL final on Wednesday night.
The Brampton Battalion director of hockey operations/coach was upset after Windsor Spitfires forward Dale Mitchell crashed into Battalion goalie Thomas McCollum with three minutes remaining.
“I don’t know how that’s not a five-minute penalty,” Butler said after the game. “The referees have got to make those calls but for reason in this series they just put their whistles away and go back to 1970s standards.”
The referees in the game were Darcy Burchell and Brent Holdsworth.
Mitchell was assessed a minor for goaltender interference on the play, but it appeared he was tripped by Brampton defenceman Josh Day before falling into McCollum.
The league saw no reason for a major penalty to be called.
McCollum was hurt on the play, and his status for Game 5 on Friday night in Windsor is doubtful. Backup Patrick Killeen was preparing to make his first start of the playoffs.
The Spitfires lead the best-of-seven series 3-1.
