Oil Kings goalie Torrie Jung was the backbone of the club's inaugural playoff run this season, and his efforts were recognized with a trio of team awards over the weekend.

The 19-year-old was named team MVP and earned the three-stars award as well as the humanitarian award.

Rookie defenceman Mark Pysyk, of Sherwood Park, was named the top defenceman and rookie of the year.

Co-captains Brenden Dowd and Jeff Lee both scored 62 points in their final WHL season to share the top-scorer award.

Forward Rhett Rachinski, 17, was named the scholastic player of the year, while the unsung hero went to rookie defenceman Henrik Tervonen.

Thunder clapping

The Edmonton Thunder won the Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey League championship last Saturday with a 4-3 double-overtime victory over the Calgary Flyers to win the series 3-1.

The Thunder are led by league MVP Jenna Klynstra and the league's top-scorer Brittany Espositio.

This weekend, the Thunder face the B.C. Champion Vancouver Fusion at NAIT in a best-of-three series to decide the Pacific championship. The winner moves on to the ESSO Cup to compete in the inaugural Canadian Midget triple-A female championship, April 19-25, in Calgary.

Junior B jamboree

The Sherwood Park Knights edged the Fort Saskatchewan Hawks 3-2 last Sunday to capture the Capital Junior Hockey League championship in a 2-1 series victory.

It's the second league championship in a row for the team and seventh for Sherwood Park in the league's 37-year history. Both the Knights and the Hawks have qualified for the Hockey Alberta Junior B provincials in Cold Lake, April 2-5.

The Hawks will join the Lloydminster Bandits, Whitecourt Wolverines and Stettler Lightning in Pool A, while the Knights are in Pool B with the Cochrane Generals, Calgary Royals Blue and host Cold Lake ICE, to determine the top Tier 3 junior team in Alberta.

The semifinal crossovers begin Saturday at 8 p.m., while the final is scheduled for Sunday at 2 p.m. at Cold Lake south.
