Rowat eyes spot with Pats

Goaltender Linden Rowat, fresh off his second training camp with the Los Angeles Kings, is in a four-way battle for the starter's job in Regina.

The Cochrane product is up against Jeff Bosch, rookie Damien Ketlo and top prospect Derek Tendler, who is with the midget AAA Regina Pat Canadians.

"I was really happy with my camp," Rowat told a Regina newspaper. "The second time around, you're not as in awe of the guys in the NHL. You kind of know what to expect ... But the competition is like four steps up."

WHEATIES PLUCK PRIESTNER

The Brandon Wheat Kings acquired goaltender James Priestner, 17, from Kamloops for a third-round pick in the next summer's bantam draft. The move leaves the Wheaties with three goaltenders, including Andrew Hayes, 18, and Joe Caliguri, 19 ... Heading into last night's game at the Saddledome, the Medicine Hat Tigers had yet to surrender a powerplay goal this season (23-for-23). The Bengals also were tops in the WHL with the man advantage (36.8%) ... Saskatoon Blades defenceman Jyri Niemi will miss 2-4 weeks with a small fracture in his back. The Finnish import, who is a third-round pick of the New York Islanders, was hurt during a rookie game against the Boston Bruins.
