High stakes for future teammates

Technically it was an exhibition game, with referees and opponents in different coloured jerseys.

And considering what was a stake, the intensity was very high.

Yet, despite the fact they were opponents, the end goal is to become teammates as the Edmonton Oil Kings brought an end to training camp with an intra-squad game last night at the Jubilee Centre in Fort Saskatchewan.

Team White earned a 7-3 victory over Team Red.

10 SCORERS

Robin Soudek, Tyler Hlookoff, T.J. Foster, Brett Breitkreuz, Phil Gervais, Logan Proulx and Dylan Wruck scored for White, while Eric Coulombe, Jeff Lee and Wade Epp responded for Team Red.

Today the Oil Kings have their first practice as a team as they prepare to host their annual pre-season tournament starting Saturday in St. Albert.

"As camp goes on each day you're trimming roster and the competition level gets a little better," said Oil Kings head coach Steve Pleau.

"That's what we were looking for (during game) is guys that aren't bothered by the next level.

'NEXT LEVEL'

"Obviously they have to be able to use their skill and their talents at the next level."

Following the game the Oil Kings pared down their roster in preparation for the four-team tournament on the weekend. Last night 40 players took part in the game with a number of veterans sitting out the contest.

Pleau would like to go into this weekend's tournament with roughly 35 players.

"We want to see that guys aren't blown back by the fact that there we are down to two teams and we have a lot of veterans," Pleau said.

"It's going to be a bit tougher to make the team because of that."
