Hockey Manitoba interested in juniors

Only the escalating costs could keep Hockey Manitoba from forming a bid to host the World Junior Hockey Championship in either 2010 or 2012.

Canada was unexpectedly awarded the 2009-2010 event last week.

The trouble is, each championship costs more than the previous one. For example, Ottawa guaranteed $12.5 million to host the 2008-09 championship.

"You'd have to weigh that in your decision," Hockey Manitoba executive director Peter Woods said yesterday. "Certainly, a number of partners, like the MTS Centre, would have to get involved. But certainly, Hockey Manitoba would be interested in getting involved. It's a quality event and Hockey Manitoba has had success in all of the events it has hosted."

In fact, Hockey Manitoba recently played host to the most successful World Women's Hockey Championship ever held and the general consensus is that Hockey Canada owes Manitoba for saving that event.

When Hockey Manitoba hosted the 1999 world juniors, games were held in Winnipeg, Brandon and other rural centres and it may need a similar setup again.

However, Hockey Manitoba has not even discussed forming a bid yet, Woods said. But it might when more details about the event come out of Hockey Canada's AGM, which will be held in Winnipeg this weekend.

Stay tuned.
