67's go for clincher

The 67's can secure themselves a playoff spot this weekend.

They can also improve their chances of success when they get there by shoring up a specific area of their game, figures coach Brian Kilrea.

"I think we'd just like to see our power play work a little bit better, that's about it," Kilrea said before last night's game against the Peterborough Petes.

"We're playing well, we've cut down on the goals against, so it's just a matter of if our power play can pop in and make it an awful lot easier.

"When you get close to the playoffs or in the playoffs, the power play sometimes decides games, so it would certainly be nice to see that pick up."

The seventh-place 67's entered the week with a chance to diminish Peterborough's hopes of post-season play. The Petes are battling with the Brampton Battalion for the eighth and final spot.

"All I know is that every game they've been playing have been close games," said Kilrea. "So they've been playing tight hockey and not giving up a lot of goals."

Kilrea, who started Brady Morrison in goal last night, planned to turn the duties over to Lukas Flueler this evening. He is undecided which will get the call for Sunday afternoon's 2 p.m. battle with the Barrie Colts at the Civic Centre.

ALPHONSO OUT

The 67's only absentee in Peterborough was veteran winger Arron Alphonso, who has started experiencing headaches last weekend.

"There's no timetable at all," said Kilrea. "All I can say is he won't be in the lineup."

Of the 67's six remaining games, only one will be played on the road. Beating Barrie Sunday would help their odds of playing the Colts in the first round.

As strong as they are, the 67's have had better success against them than option 'B,' the Mississauga Ice Dogs.

The 67's open up their final week of the regular season Wednesday in Belleville. They return home for three games next weekend, against Oshawa Friday and Saturday then the finale, versus the Sudbury Wolves on Sunday.
