Kelly Kisio is waiting for some of his veterans to realize the 2006-07 WHL season has started.

Last night the Hitmen (2-1) lost their first game of the season, 5-2 in Regina against the Pats, and the Calgary GM/head coach said he just wasn't seeing a quality effort from some of the senior members.

"It was kind of an uninspired effort by a lot of the guys here," Kisio said after the game.

"The veterans. They haven't really got 'er going yet and it doesn't seem like it's that close on the horizon, so I'm a little cranky right now."

It was an even contest after one period as both teams scored. Nikko Snellman for Regina and Brodie Dupont, on the powerplay, for Calgary at 19:21. It was Dupont's second tally of the campaign.

Then the Pats took a 2-1 lead on Derek Hulak's first of the night at 7:42 of the second.

Regina broke it open in the final frame on Hulak's second goal and one from Justin Bernhardt, at 17:26, who had a good game with a total of three points.

Keegan Dansereau, with his second of the season, scored a late goal for the Hitmen in the final frame.

Many WHL pundits have said Regina, after years and years of futility, has finally turned the corner and Kisio said the Pats (2-1) are a pretty solid club.

"I thought Regina was good. They're a strong hockey team and didn't allow us to get to the net a lot of times and on top of that we just didn't compete hard enough to get to the front of the net," he said.

"They move the puck as well as anybody I've seen and they do a lot of good things."

The Hitmen went 1-for-10 on the powerplay and did a great job penalty killing, stopping the Pats on all 10 of their man advantage opportunities.

Regina, however, outshot the Hitmen 32-24.

The Hitmen continue their prairie road trip tomorrow night in Moose Jaw (7 p.m.), then travel into Manitoba to take on the Brandon Wheat Kings Saturday (7:30 p.m.).

Calgary doesn't return home until next Friday when the Kootenay Ice come to town.
