London played major role in OHL draft

Local minor hockey associations produced a thick crop of pickings in last week's Ontario Hockey League 2006 priority selection draft.

The four elite minor programs -- the London Junior Knights, the Elgin- Middlesex Chiefs, the Lambton Junior Sting and the Huron-Perth Lakers -- had 30 players selected.

Eleven players from the four associations were selected in the first five rounds. The Chatham-Kent Cyclones had one taken, defenceman T.J. Brodie, seventh in the third round by the Saginaw Spirit. Goalie John Missiaen was chosen from the Dresden system, third in the fifth round, by Peterborough Petes.

A 14th player taken in the in the top five was American Thomas Battani, a winger who played junior B with the Petrolia Jets. The Windsor Spitfires took him seventh in the second round.

Eleven players were selected from London's Junior Knights program, headed by goal scorer Nazem Kadri, who went 18th in the first round to the Kitchener Rangers.

Eight players were selected from the Elgin-Middlesex Chiefs in the 15 rounds. Highest pick among them was defenceman Brian Shaw, who went to the Erie Otters fifth in the third round.

Five were selected from the Huron-Perth Lakers organization, the highest being goalie Anthony Peters, who went second in the third round to the Oshawa Generals.

The Lambton Sting also had five players selected, led by winger Chase Clark, taken 12th in the fifth round by Sarnia.
