Rebels latest Pogge victim

RED DEER -- Justin Pogge has become quite the author.

He already penned a Canadian best-seller last month when he led Team Canada to an improbable world junior gold medal.

Now, he's re-writing the Calgary Hitmen franchise record book.

He added another page last night in Calgary's 3-0 win over the Rebels at the Red Deer Centrium.

The 19-year-old 'tender earned his third straight goose egg -- that's a record -- to give him 11 on the season -- that's a record.

His current shutout streak is at 218:38. You guessed it -- another record.

If Pogge's aware of his record-setting numbers, he's not letting on.

"Three wins," was Pogge's response when asked about his record string. "I don't really pay attention to that stuff.

"I knew it was my 11th shutout but that's about it."

Barry Brust (2004) held the old mark at 178:49. Pogge could take a run at the WHL record of 265:13, set in 1967-68 by Flin Flon's Chris Worthy when the Hitmen host Saskatoon tonight (7 p.m. at the 'Dome).

He hasn't allowed a goal since Red Deer's Ted Vandermeer's shorthanded breakaway tally at 1:22 of the second period Feb. 9.

Defenceman Karl Alzner said the 6-ft. 3-in. stopper, who was greeted by chants of 'Pog-ge, Pog-ge' when he was announced as the game's first star, never mentioned a word about the streak.

"When we were coming off the ice, (Brodie) Dupont grabbed the puck because (Pogge) likes to keep his shutout pucks," Alzner said. "Dups said 'this one's for the record' so I asked what he meant by that.

"So I just heard about it and it wasn't from him. He's pretty humble about it.

"It's great for him and it makes us defencemen look good too. I'm real happy for him."

Keegan Dansereau, Freddie Pettersson and Brett Carson provided the offence as Calgary (43-15-1-0) moved into sole possession of top spot in the WHL for the first time since Jan. 23.

Medicine Hat, with a game in hand, sits two points back.
