Aliu will have to wait and see

Mark Guy is fully confident the Windsor Spitfires will be able to trade his client, Akim Aliu, in early January.

Aliu left the Spits on Friday, returning home to Toronto during the weekend to await a trade. As an OHL first-round pick, Aliu can be traded only from Jan. 1-10 in his rookie season.

"Everything the Spitfires have led me to believe is that they will move him during that period," Guy said. "Certainly they can start talking to teams now, but nothing would be consummated before Jan. 1."

Aliu's departure means the combatants in an ugly fight during practice in September both are gone from Windsor. Steve Downie -- whose fight with Aliu led to an investigation by OHL commissioner David Branch that uncovered a hazing incident and resulted in a lengthy suspension for general manager and coach Moe Mantha, recently was traded to the Peterborough Petes. Downie will make his return to Windsor with the Petes on Friday.

A first-round pick of the Philadelphia Flyers, Downie is a strong candidate to play for Canada at the world junior next month.
