The Calgary Hitmen are back on top.

Justin Pogge kicked out 31 shots as the Hitmen beat the Rockets 2-1 last night in Kelowna.

Riley Merkley and captain Brett Carson scored for the Hitmen, who improved to a WHL-best 14-4-0-0.

The Rockets, who received their only goal from Blake Comeau, slipped to 12-5-0-1.

Calgary GM/head coach Kelly Kisio said his team was fired up to prove it was the top dog in the league.

"The guys were real excited to play," Kisio said. "Now, we have to make sure we stay on an even keel.

"We'll enjoy this one for a while and then get ready for the next one."

The Hitmen are in Vancouver tonight (8 p.m.).

Following a scoreless opening period, Merkley notched his fifth of the campaign on the powerplay at 2:52 of the middle stanza.

Carson also scored with the man advantage at 4:29 of the final frame.

The visitors bottled it up defensively and didn't surrender a shot for the first 13 1/2 minutes.

Comeau made it interesting with his 10th of the season with 1:56 to play but Pogge stood tall again.

"Anytime you have Pogge back there and you're not giving up many shots, it's definitely good for us," Kisio said.

Calgary was 2-for-8 on the powerplay and killed off all seven shorthanded situations.

The Hitmen return home Nov. 11 to take on the Everett Silvertips.
