Cherry picking on Killer's agenda

Ottawa 67's coach and GM Brian Kilrea, never a guy to miss an edge, will have a telephone conversation this morning with his newest scout.

The OHL draft is set for next Saturday and Kilrea's crack staff is ready to find more gems like winger Jamie McGinn (50th overall last year; now playing on the club's top line).

This morning, Kilrea will get a couple of names of potential sleeper picks from his old buddy, Don Cherry.

"Grapes," who had a quieter winter than usual because of the NHL lockout, has been doing some scouting for Kilrea and the 67's.

"He goes with his son, Tim, who's working for Central Scouting and he likes it," Kilrea said after the 67's practised yesterday morning.

Scheduling conflicts

Kilrea was originally going to fly to Toronto to meet with Cherry, but both their schedules have wound up being busy -- Kilrea with guiding his team into the OHL final again and Cherry with filming more commercials.

As a result, Kilrea will have his lists home with him today and will talk to Cherry over the telephone.

"He said he's got four or five players who might not be highly rated, but could make the team and play," said Kilrea. "Everyone knows who the top kids are. He's got a couple he likes, so we'll run over them and see where they fit in our scheme of things."

Cherry, by the way, was one of the first people to call Kilrea and congratulate him after the 67's sweep of the Peterborough Petes.

There was also another guy by the name of Orr who called, too.
