Majors win in style

Maybe it was the hair. The St. Michael's Majors, many of who are wearing their hair in corn rows for the playoffs, last night marched into the Hershey Centre and upset the Mississauga IceDogs 3-1 in Game 1 of their Ontario Hockey League playoff series.

"That's a great start for us and we're going to build off it," said Majors goalie Justin Peters, who made 26 saves. "We know we're coming in as the underdog. (The new hairdos) is a kind of goofy thing. It's a little fun, but some of the guys are in a bit of pain because their scalps are so tight."

Looks aside, the Majors, the No. 8 seed in the Eastern Conference, proved at least for one night the regular season meant nothing. St. Mike's finished 14 points behind the No. 1 IceDogs but they played a smart, opportunistic road game before a large crowd of 5,488.

St. Mike's scored three power-play goals on seven chances and took advantage of a somewhat shaky Michael Ouzas to do so. Ouzas -- acquired from the Majors early in the season -- played in the OHL all-star game in Owen Sound in February and became the starting goalie in Mississauga over David Shantz as the season progressed, but allowed the first two Majors shots to get past him last night.

Colin Power, Justin Donati and Scott Lehman scored for St. Michael's, which plays host to Game 2 tomorrow at 2 p.m. at St. Michael's Arena.

Tomislav Zanoski scored for Mississauga.

The Majors were tight defensively and didn't give IceDogs star Patrick O'Sullivan much space.

The best-of-seven quarter-final is expected to be intense and rough, and it was last night, but Mississauga coach Greg Gilbert was unhappy with his team's undisciplined play.

"You have to hand it to St. Mike's, who came at us hard, but we were terrible," Gilbert said.

"You win the conference in the regular season and you think it is going to be a piece of cake. You get a rude awakening pretty quick. Stupid penalties behind the play, selfish penalties. (And) we've talked for a few days about emotional control and sucking it up."
