67's 4 Generals 1

The 67's got the message.

Hours after GM/coach Brian Kilrea delivered a wakeup call by shipping offensively talented defenceman Kyle Wharton to Sault Ste. Marie, the 67's responded with a 4-1 win over Oshawa.

The victory in front of a sellout crowd of 9,852 last night at the Civic Centre was neither pretty, nor perfect, but a win nonetheless.

"We got the two points. That's what matters," said Kilrea. "You know that it's tough for both teams coming back from the Christmas break. I don't think either team was sharp.

"We did enough to get the job done and I thought (goaltender) Danny Battochio was sharp."

Mark Mancari, named the OHL's player of the week on Dec. 19, picked up right where he left off before the holidays by scoring two goals, while Brad Bonello and Brody Todd chipped in with singles.

Mancari, who has seven goals and 10 points in his last four games, said he's just trying to contribute any way he can.

"I wasn't happy with the start I got to the year and I wanted to step it up," said Mancari. "These wins are huge because they mean (two) points for us.

"It doesn't matter if I rack up the points. What means the most is getting the wins. You've got to do that by getting in a hit or doing whatever it takes to make sure the team is successful."

The 67's were awarded a penalty shot in the final minute when an Oshawa player covered the puck in the crease, but goalie Carlo DiRienzo made a toe save off Bonello.

"I know people are going to question why I didn't give Mancari the chance at the hat-trick," said Kilrea. "Bonello has had a couple of breakaways and he's been successful."

NOTABLES: Former Carolina assistant Randy Ladouceur, a scout for the 'Canes, was in the stands last night and is the top candidate to replace fired Gens coach Bob McGill ... 67's D Elgin Reid, who has been troubled by chronic shoulder problems, returned to the lineup ... The 67's recalled F Thomas Kiriakou from the Junior 'A' North York Rangers for last night's game.
