Strong camps give Beauchemin the edge

Rejean Beauchemin had a feeling the phone in his room might ring yesterday morning but luckily, the person on the other end wasn't looking for him. Thanks to a strong evaluation camp and an even better summer camp, the Winnipegger joined Jeff Glass as Team Canada's goaltenders for the World Junior Hockey Championship, which opens Dec. 25 in Grand Forks, N.D., and Thief River Falls, Minn.

"I probably only got a couple of hours (of sleep) in," said Beauchemin, who plays for the Prince Albert Raiders of the WHL. "I woke up around 3 o'clock and decided I would go for a shave to kill some time. I laid in my bed for quite a while and my mind was racing."

Hearing the news made him want to jump for joy, but Beauchemin had to subdue his enthusiasm temporarily because roommate Kevin Nastiuk was one of the goalies who was cut. Devan Dubnyk, the lone 18-year-old in the crease battle, was the other.

"We both went up to our room (after breakfast) and it was really tense," said Beauchemin. "Kevin got the call and that's sort of how I found out. It was a little awkward, but we wished each other luck and after that I gave myself a big smile."

Glass, a Cochrane, Alta., product who plays for the Kootenay Ice, was seen as the favourite by some because he plays for a strong defensive team that doesn't always give up a lot of shots.

Because Canada is expected to have such a strong team, being able to deal with stretches of inactivity was seen as a prerequisite for the position.

The chosen goalies will now make their cases to be the starter -- though it's possible Canada could enter with a 1A and 1B format and give each goalie a start during the first two games of round-robin play.

"I'm sure it's something that's up for grabs right now," said Beauchemin, a sixth round selection of the Philadelphia Flyers in 2003. "We're going to push each other in practice as much as we can and whatever happens, happens. I'll assume any role that they want me to."
