Petruzalek could teach new 67's mates thing or two
By CHRIS STEVENSON, Ottawa Sun

SAGINAW, Mich. -- The more you watch 67's F Jakub Petruzalek, the more you have to like the way he plays. He took a huge open-ice hit in Windsor on Thursday night, dragged himself up and made it back to the bench. Don Cherry would have been proud.

Then he almost went out and won the game in regulation time, making a great individual play only to see his shot go off the crossbar.

If a few more 67's would show the same guts as Petruzalek and feisty Brad Bonnello, 67's coach and GM Brian Kilrea might not have to contemplate a trade.

HEAR AND THERE: In this neck of the woods, the big deal yesterday was the annual Michigan-Michigan State grudge match. They take their football seriously around here. One Michigan State fan had a vanity plate with the rival Wolverines' "M" logo followed by "ORONS" ... Ashlee Simpson's dad said she was suffering from acid reflux and that's why she needed to lip-synch on Saturday Night (not-so) Live. Acid reflux? Maybe that was just a sympathetic response to her audience.

REVELATIONS: The scuttlebutt here in Michigan is Peter Karmanos, who made his fortune with the Compuware computer company, is looking to unload the Carolina Hurricanes ... Just so you know, this column is being augmented by pre-recorded writing because the writer is suffering from a lack of talent.

SPECULATIONS: The CFL coaching marketplace could be a busy place in a couple of weeks. Along with the Renegades, the Edmonton Eskimos and Winnipeg Blue Bombers could be looking for new field bosses, too ... Had to come to Saginaw, of all places, to see the first lapel sporting a poppy this year.

LEMME SAY THIS ABOUT THAT: With the NHL lockout dragging on, you will be happy to know they are bringing hi-tech to bowling telecasts. In case you missed it, one of bowling's four majors is being played out today. "Stromotion" will show frame-by-frame the ball's journey into the pins. The "Simulcam" will allow one bowler's image to be shown over another's, so you can break down their technique and angles of attack. Please, Bob. Please, Gary. End the lockout now ... For the World Bowling Championships in April, ESPN is also going to add the Skycam. I don't know about you, but every bowling alley I've been in has about a 15-foot ceiling. That's one low Skycam.

JUST WONDERING: What came first? Plymouth the city or the car? ... Who was that couple smooching on the field as the Red Sox celebrated their World Series win? It was Jimmy Fallon and Drew Barrymore, acting in a new happy ending to a Farrelly brothers movie. The ending had to be redone after the Red Sox rebounded to beat the New York Yankees. Hope this movie's better than Fallon's last, Taxi, or he could be the next guy suffering from a curse.

NAPKIN NOTES: I don't know how much room there is on the walls of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats dressing room, but I'm guessing there's not enough as far as Argos kick returner Bashir Levingston is concerned. "We're going to beat them again for the third time this year. Same thing that happened (a week ago Thursday) is going to happen in the semi-finals. Ain't nothing going to change. It just might be a little worse," he said after the Argos punked the Tabbies last week. Levingston has never lost to the Ticats. "The only way Hamilton is going to beat me is if I'm on Hamilton. Am I going to Hamilton? Nah. When I'm with Toronto just like I am right now, nah, we ain't losing to Hamilton." Confidence and self-image apparently are not issues for Levingston.
