Danny Syvret didn't know whether he could vote for himself. He just figured that he couldn't. In the end, one ballot didn't mean anything as the third-year defenceman was named captain of the London Knights in voting among the players and coaches yesterday.
The Knights also named their four alternate captains -- over-age left-winger Brandon Prust, right-winger Corey Perry, left-winger Dylan Hunter and right-winger Rick Steadman.
Perry and Steadman will wear the A on the black sweater, which the Knights will wear at home until Christmas. Prust and Hunter will wear the A on the white sweater, which is worn on the road the first half of the schedule. OHL teams switch after Christmas.
"I'm surprised because we have a lot of leaders on this team and you could give the C to any one of the five guys who have a letter on their sweater right now," said Syvret, 19, a Western student.
He attended the national junior summer camp in Calgary and was at the New York Rangers' rookie camp.
Syvret said he voted for Prust, Hunter, Perry, Steadman and Marc Methot.
"I just assumed you couldn't vote for yourself. I'm glad somebody did. Personally, it means a lot.
"There's a lot of responsibility. But in having said that, there's a lot of responsibility in being assistant captain,as well. The group I'm referring to will work together as a whole in leading. I don't think it's a one-man deal."
