Bob Nicholson is stepping down as president and CEO of Hockey Canada.

The official announcement will come at a news conference Friday afternoon at the MasterCard Centre in Toronto.

Nicholson, who has held both positions since June 1998, has been at the helm for seven Olympic gold medals, 12 world junior titles, five men’s world championships and 10 women’s world championships.

With the departure of Nicholson from Hockey Canada, which goes into effect June 1, there will be speculation that he will wind up with an NHL club in a front-office capacity.

In 2003, when the Toronto Maple Leafs hired John Ferguson Jr. as general manager, Nicholson was one of the final candidates for the job, along with Neil Smith and Steve Tambellini.
