EDMONTON - The father of an Edmonton teen who was allegedly grabbed from behind and punched into unconsciousness during a hockey game has launched a $500,000 lawsuit.

According to a statement of claim filed in Court of Queen’s Bench on March 25, Hale Deleeuw was playing for the Strathcona Warriors in a Midget minor hockey match against the Warburg Mustangs on March 6, 2011.

Darcy Deleeuw alleges it was a physical game and his son was “forcibly body-checked” by Mustang player Jeven Varga as he skated behind the net without the puck.

Then, after the whistle was blown and as his son skated to the player’s bench for a line change, Deleeuw alleges Varga grabbed his son from behind in a “cowardly manner” and began to punch him in the side of the head.
