WINNIPEG - Winnipeg minor hockey officials are probing an allegation a St. Vital coach told his team of teenage boys how to fight on the ice, and that one of the players suffered a concussion as a result.
Hockey Winnipeg and the St. Vital Minor Hockey Association are trying to determine whether there’s any basis to the accusation the incident with the Norberry-Glenlee Knights midget team occurred during a practice within the past week or so, with all players — aged 16 or 17 — present taking part in the fighting instruction.
“Hopefully, it’s unfounded. If it isn’t, it would be troubling,” Peter Woods, executive director of Hockey Manitoba, told the Winnipeg Sun on Thursday.
Woods pointed out fighting among players is prohibited at Manitoba’s minor hockey levels.
