Alex Ovechkin now has a gritty winger to go in front of the net in the so-called “dirty” areas.

After allowing tough guy Donald Brashear to sign with the New York Rangers, Washington Capitals GM George McPhee acted quickly in picking up power play specialist Mike Knuble, the former Philadelphia Flyer.

Considering Knuble has registered six consecutive seasons of 20-plus goals, his price -- two-years, $5.6 million, which equates to an annual salary of $2.8 million -- is a relative bargain.

Knuble’s forte is standing at the edge of the crease and sniffing for rebounds, a commodity that he’ll find plenty of when Ovechkin on the ice.

Meanwhile, the Flyers inked Brian Boucher to back up recently signed Ray Emery between the pipes.
