The old saying goes, ‘Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.’

For Mark O’Meara, perhaps it was convenient one of his closest friends in the golf world — Tiger Woods — was also one of his closest foes on the course.

“Tiger coming into my life motivated me,” said O’Meara, now 56 and one of numerous major champions in the field for the Champions Tour’s Shaw Charity Classic.

“I started playing with him before he ever got his card, before he won his first tournament on tour. He was full of (vim) and vinegar. He was so motivated. He was driven.

“He knew he had the immense amount of talent and, there’s no question, when you play with someone that is extremely more talented than you are, it just helped step my game up.

“I knew that, yeah, I didn’t have the ability to hit the ball like Tiger, but being around him and playing him, it kind of rubbed off on me."
