AUGUSTA, GA. - On a Thursday when the greens were already at lightning speed, Mike Weir was able to harness his short game to stay within hailing distance of the leaders, fashioning a round of one-over-par 73.

“It’s a brute, of course — long and tough,” said Weir. “I would have loved to have been a couple better, but it’s still a nice solid round, nice to make a good solid putt from about six feet on the final hole (for par).

He made birdies at No. 2, No. 7 and No. 15 and bogeys at 3, 5, 12 and 17 to go with 11 pars.

Weir did get a bit lucky on the 11th hole when he hit a low shot into the green and it skipped off the back on a downslop toward the water. It stopped on the edge of a little shaved berm, just a foot or two from the pond. He chipped it up to about three feet for par.

“That was a nice little break,” he conceded. “I hit a beautiful tee shot and had mud all over my ball. I wanted to hit a low shot so it would skip and get the mud off it."
