So, which icon will be missed most this week at Augusta National Golf Club?

Tiger Woods? Or the Eisenhower Tree?

It’s a close thing, but I’m leaning toward the lower-case wood. Golfers come and golfers go, even the great ones like Tiger, but a magnificent 125-year-old loblolly pine? Not even the horticultural magicians of Augusta National can replace something like that.

What’s left of Ike’s Tree after it was ravaged by a freak ice storm earlier this year is a pile of cordwood stored in a secret hideaway, awaiting some future purpose.

“The loss of the Eisenhower Tree is difficult news to accept,” Augusta National and Masters Chairman Billy Payne said in a statement. “We obtained opinions from the best arborists available and, unfortunately, were advised that no recovery was possible.”
