Fred Couples’ Masters magic abandoned him in his hour of need Saturday and his collapse was so thorough that he thought he had dragged playing partner Jason Day down the tubes with him.
After playing solidly all afternoon, 53-year-old Couples, who owns the lowest scoring average of any player in history with 100 Masters rounds, dropped five shots in the final five holes, including a triple-bogey seven at the 17th to sit seven shots off the lead.
“How bad does it hurt?” said Couples, repeating a question. “It was a comedy of bad shots. It pretty much takes me out of it for tomorrow. I was mediocre.
