CALGARY - The galleries at the Alberta Open are usually limited to rules officials, family members and girlfriends.

So when Stephen Ames showed up as a spectator — on a chilly spring day, no less — for the final round of Alberta Golf’s marquee event in 2011, the presence of the PGA Tour regular did not go unnoticed.

Turns out, Calgary’s most accomplished golfer was there to show his support for a smooth-swinging kid.

“I was the youngest player ever to make the cut in the Alberta Open — I was 14 years old — and I had played in the Stephen Ames Cup about a month before that,” recalled Crossfield’s Patrick Murphy, now 17 and still one of the rising stars on the local golf scene.
