As far as high drama in majors, 2014 has been a major disappointment.

It began with Bubba Watson turning Augusta National into his personal playground. Then, the action moved to Pinehurst No. 2 where Martin Kaymer gave golf fans the weekend off by winning the tournament on Friday. Now, Rory McIlroy takes a six-shot lead into the final round on a course whose greatest defence is weather that refuses to roll in.

Does all this mean it has been a boring year of golf so far? Not so fast.

Although TV executives, newspaper editors, and casual sports fans sleep through any major that doesn’t feature Tiger Woods or at least a back-nine battle, the true golf nut always sees the diamond in the rough.

Let’s start with the Masters.

While casual sports fans became bored watching Bubba tear up Jordan Spieth on Sunday, golf nuts couldn’t take their eyes off watching Watson tear up Augusta National.
