Tom Watson this week answered the question with a question.

The question was whether or not Tiger Woods, just back from a fairly substantial back surgery, would be a consideration for the American Ryder Cup squad. Watson’s response was one that will do little to quell the debate.

“Who wouldn't pick Tiger Woods to be on your Ryder Cup team?” Watson said. “That is the question to everybody. Who wouldn't pick him?

Obviously there is a camp that wouldn’t pick Woods, the greatest player of this generation. They will trot out the rules of qualifying should Woods not creep up into the top nine to earn an automatic berth on the U.S. squad that will attempt to wrest back the Ryder Cup from the Europeans in September at Gleneagles in Scotland.

Woods may play just three times between now and the Ryder Cup -- two majors, the British and PGA, as well as the World Golf Championships Bridgestone Invitational -- and it’s quite possible he will have to rely on the captain’s pick.
