The maiden PGA Tour victory for Steven Bowditch on an unspectacular day of golf almost was the second-biggest story this week at the Valero Texas Open.

In a final round that featured a glacial pace of play by the final group, the 30-year-old Aussie fended off six-time PGA Tour winner Matt Kuchar with a final-round 76, a somewhat surprising victor given that he had finished in the top-10 just twice in 109 career starts.

With apologies to Bowditch, though, the bigger news this week seemed to come a day earlier when Phil Mickelson pulled out of the tournament, which featured a less-than star-studded field in the run-up to The Masters.
