OAKVILLE, ONT. - Sometimes great isn’t good enough. Just ask John Merrick.

The American fired a course record-tying 10-under-par 62 and it still wasn’t enough to hold on to the lead after two rounds of the Canadian Open.

His compatriot, Hunter Mahan, snuck up from behind him and shot an eight-under 64 on Friday to post a two-round total of 13 under, two better than the man from Long Beach, Calif.

“Sixty-two is a pretty good round,” Mahan said afterward, “but I didn’t really think I could catch him.”

But if anybody was going to steal Merrick’s thunder, his feat that matched golf great Greg Norman’s mark back in 1986, it’s not surprising it was Mahan.

The Texas resident has been playing some great golf of late, having put himself in the final groupings of the past two majors, including last week’s British Open where he finished tied for ninth after going four over on the final day.
