Weir disappointed with Open showing

It was impossible for Mike Weir to hide his dejection. The Canadian Open is his fifth major and it ate him up not to be able to do it justice, especially in front of a devoted gallery.

“I have great support,” he said, after shooting 74 Friday for a two-round total of 146 that left him seven shots outside the cut line.

“I want to give a better show and the fans are great. I wanted to play well for them.

“I was playing as hard as I could and I was struggling. I’m at a point in my game where I am struggling. Everybody goes through it at some point in their career and I have to keep working and fight my way out of it.”

Weir’s game has not been sharp all season but that lack of precision was compounded this week by a case of tendinitis in his right arm. While he said the injury was not a factor, there were enough wonky swings the past two days to be certain that it was.

“The guys in the fitness trailer did a great job,” he said. “Wednesday it didn’t feel very good at all but it wasn’t a factor.”

The injury was a factor in the sense that Weir was unable to practice the way he wanted.

“I couldn’t prepare, especially after having three weeks off before the British,” he said. “I’m not using it as an excuse but when you can’t practice, it makes it a bit harder.”

A further source of irritation was the fact that St. George’s was there to be plundered because of the soft conditions and the fact the players were playing lift, clean and place. In another time and place, this would have been Mike Weir’s kind of golf course

“The rain softened the course and we got to have the ball in our hands,” he said. “If you’re driving the ball in the fairway, you can score. If you’re hitting it where I was, you can’t. You can’t score from the rough here. I was in the rough all day.”

Weir said he’ll spend the next few days getting treatment on his tendinitis and expects to be back for the World Golf Championship-Bridgestone in Akron, Ohio.
