Tiger Woods has called in the big guns.

The golfer, who is expected to return to the Tour sometime in the next month or so, has enlisted the help of Ari Fleischer, George W. Bush’s former press secretary, to help him deal with the media.

With the furor surrounding his alleged mistresses, the current state of his marriage and a pair of rehabilitation stints having died off, sports fans have turned their eyes to Woods’ return to golf instead.

And when he finally hits the links, the PGA will breathe one huge sigh of relief. The tour, which saw an average viewership increase of 136 per cent when Tiger returned in 2009 from a layoff following his father’s death, would be facing down its worst nightmare if he skips out on 2010.

Because of his marketability, once he does return the press will likely hound him – so in comes Fleischer, a man who’s used to cleaning up after one of the most quote-worthy American presidents in recent memory.

The Ari Fletcher Sports Communication website cites his services as helping to “identify and help fix problems. We sharpen messages and improve images. We help those who are good at working with the press become even better.”

Fleischer is more recently known as the man who helped MLB superstar Mark McGwire negotiate his way through his steroid admission.
