Fortin-Simard close to final round of PGA Q-School

Keven Fortin-Simard of Quebec City moved a step closer to advancing to the final round of the PGA Tour's qualifying school.

Fortin-Simard had a third round of 68 Friday, moving him into a tie for fourth at the Brooksville, Fla., competition, one of five events constituting the second stage of PGA qualifying. The top 20 golfers plus ties after Saturday's fourth round at Brooksville advance to the third and final stage of qualifying.

Fortin-Simard was at 12 under after three rounds, three shots off the lead.

Jon Mills of Oshawa, Ont., was tied for 14th.

At Beaumont, Calif., David McKenzie of Victoria and Barrett Jarosch of Edmonton were in strong positions to advance, entering the final round tied for sixth.

Toronto's Seung Lee was tied for 10th. The top 20 plus tied advance.

At Pine Mountain, Ga., Ian Leggatt of Cambridge, Ont., shot a round of 3-under 69 and moved from 30th into a tie for 18th. Graham DeLaet of Weyburn, Sask., was tied for 28th, but only one stroke back of Leggatt. The top 20 plus ties advance.

At Kingwood, Texas, David Hearn of Brantford, Ont., shot 2-under 70 and moved into a tie for 12th. Brad Fritsch of Manotick,Ont., was tied for 17th after a 3-under 69.

The top 19 plus ties advance at Kingwood.
