Shoot 62, hope for best

Tiger Woods' shadow looms large here, as it does over any event, and speculation about who will take him on in singles Sunday remains a hot topic.

"I definitely have somebody I've already chose to play Tiger. You're talking about one of the greatest players that ever played golf in Tiger, so the guy he is playing has nothing to lose," said International captain Gary Player.

American captain Jack Nicklaus said he'd like to see Canadian Mike Weir play Woods.

Did Ernie Els, who lost at home to Woods in 2003 in South Africa, have any advice for Weir if that's the way it turns out?

"Shoot 62," said The Big Easy, "and hope for the best."

LIFE MAY BE GOOD YET

There has been lots of talk about the long-term benefits for golf of having the Presidents Cup here in Canada, but a strong national open wouldn't hurt, huh?

A lot of business is being done among the corporate tents here and the most important for Canadian golf might be the Royal Canadian Golf Association signing up LG Electronics as a title sponsor for the Canadian Open.
