Ten minutes into his first round at the first stage of PGA Tour qualifying school, Manotick's Brad Fritsch was already 2-under par.

Fritsch wound up shooting 29 on the front nine on his way to a 6-under 64 and a three-shot lead after the first round yesterday at Florence Country Club in Florence, S.C.

Fritsch holed a wedge shot from 131 yards on the first hole for an eagle and finished off his round with a 15-foot putt for eagle on the par-5 18th.

"A good start, to say the least," said Fritsch, who is at Q-school for the fifth time. "Sixty-four is always good, especially at Q-school.

''I'm just trying to treat it like any other tourament."

Fritsch is three shots ahead of Sean Quinlivan of Ireland.

The top 18 players and ties after 72 holes will move on to the second round of qualifying next month.
