A pair of Manitobans are lurking behind the leader at the Canadian Mid-Amateur Golf Championship at The Oaks Golf Club in Delaware, Ont. this week.

Breezy Bend's Garth Collings is one-over-par through the first two rounds and six shots back of the leader, Woodbridge Ont.'s Dave Bunker. Collings shot an even-par 72 yesterday in a consistent scorecard of 16 pars, a birdie and bogey.

In the mid-masters division for golfers over the age of 40, Collings is in fifth spot. Bunker also leads that race.

FALTERED

Manitoba amateur and mid-amateur champ Brad Kirton is eight shots off the lead after a two-over-par 74 yesterday. His round was a tale of two nines. The Pine Ridge member fired four birdies on the opening nine, but faltered with four bogeys and a double bogey on the back nine.

The other Manitoban to make the cut, Mike Walker, sits at six-over-par for the tournament after a 79 yesterday. A rollercoaster 18 yesterday saw Walker make two birdies, nine pars, five bogeys and two double bogeys. He opened the tournament with a one-under-par 71.

Walker is in 24th in the mid-masters event.

Brad Depape missed the nine-over-par cut by two strokes after rounds of 81 and 74.

As for Manitoba's team score, the local golfers combined to shoot a two-day total of five-over-par 437. Only the top three scores from each day were used for the team score.

Ontario won the team event with an 11-under-par 421, while Alberta was six shots back in second.
