Jackson captures senior men's championship

Portage's Don Jackson won the Manitoba Senior Men's Golf Championship yesterday at the Larters at St. Andrews Golf and Country.

He fired two-over-par 72 to finish with a final tournament score of five-over par 215 in the three-day event.

Niawka's Barry Minish, Southwood's Menno Zacharias and Killarney's Irv Benne all finished in tie for second place with a tournament score of 18-over-par 228.

This quartet of golfers will represent the province at the 2007 Canadian Men's Senior Championship next month at the Kawartha Golf and Country Club in Peterborough, Ont.

NATIVE FASTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS: The John Blumberg Softball Complex is the site for the 2007 Canadian Native Fastball Championships, which will take place this weekend.

More than 50 teams, mostly from Western Canada, have converged on Winnipeg to compete in the event.

SWIM MEDALLERS: Manitoba had six swimmers medal at the 2007 Swim Canada Age Group Nationals.

Chantal VanLandeghem was the big winner, taking gold in the four events and silver in six more races. Cam Dixon had three gold and bronze. Renee Deschenes won a gold and silver. Marissa Davies claimed two bronze. Bryan Wray had a bronze and Jessica Plant scored to gold.

SENIOR CRICKET: Approximately 90 cricketers will showcase their talents this weekend and into next week at the 2007 Manitoba Senior Invitational Cricket Championship.

Teams from Australia, England, New Zealand, India and the United States have participated in the event.

WATERSKI NATS: Waterski-Wakeboard Manitoba will entertain the nation for the 2007 Canadian Adaptive Nationals on Aug. 11-12. The event will held at the training facility in Transcona.

HOCKEY CAMP: Five Manitobans will be looking to crack Hockey Canada's Under-18 roster this weekend for the Memorial of Ivan Hlinka Tournament to held from Aug. 14 to 18 in the Czech Republic.

Brandon Wheat Kings defenceman Colby Robak and Calgary Hitmen defenceman Michael Stone will be at the camp. For forwards, Prince George Cougar Dale Hunt, Winnipeg Saint Jordan Mistelbacher and Shattuck St. Mary's David Toews will also be vying for a spot on the 22-man team.
