Jordan Krantz gave it a good run, but he failed to qualify for this week's PGA Tour event in Texas.

Krantz, the two-time Manitoba men's amateur champ from Vermilion Bay, Ont., tied for 23rd yesterday in the open qualifier for the EDS Byron Nelson Classic.

Krantz fired a 2-under-par 69 and missed qualifying by four shots. Only the top four gained entry into the $6.3-million US event.

The PGA Tour features two stages of qualifying. Krantz won the pre-qualifying event last Tuesday when he tied for first in the 159-player field after shooting a 4-under 67. The top 61 players advanced to yesterday's open qualifying stage.

Among the players Krantz finished ahead of last Tuesday was Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo.

Krantz, who attended the University of Texas-Arlington, turned pro in the fall of 2005 and made one cut on the Tight Lies Tour last summer. He entered PGA Tour qualifying school in the fall but was eliminated in the first stage.

AROUND THE NCAA: Winnipeg's Matt Johnston closed out his college career at the University of Texas-San Antonio last week with a 15th-place finish in the Southland Conference Championship.

Johnston, the defending Manitoba men's amateur champ, shot 73-74-76 in Kerrville, Texas. He had six top-10 finishes in his four years at UTSA and plans to turn pro in the fall. Winnipeg's Scott Loewen, who plays at Boise State, tied for 95th at BYU's Cougar Classic over the weekend, firing rounds of 79-77-79.

Loewen and the Broncos will compete in the WAC Championship April 30 to May 2 in Reno, Nev.
