The RCGA Men's Amateur Championship concluded its stroke play portion yesterday and two Manitobans are still the in the hunt.
Winnipeg's Stewart Bannatyne and Matt Johnston are part of a group of eight golfers that will participate in a playoff this morning in Mississauga, Ont., for the five remaining spots in the 64-player match play tournament, which begins today. Bannatyne fired a 72 yesterday, while Johnston carded a 73 to finish the two rounds at 6-over-par 148.
Four other Manitobans were in the field. Peter More and Brad Kirton missed the cut by two strokes. More shot a 72 yesterday, but it wasn't quite enough. Kirton had a pair of 75's. Garth Collings and Tyler Mancini finished as part of a tie for 80th at 10-over-par 152.
Mark Leon of Brampton, Ont. and Kris Wasylowich of Lethbridge, Alta., will be the top two seeds in the match play event after tying for first in the stroke play event at 6-under-par 136.
HOMETOWN CHAMP: Shayne Fredborg won the Manitoba Men's Rural Amateur Golf Championship on his home course in Selkirk in a playoff over Dauphin's Ryan Horn and Mike Frost of Quarry Oaks yesterday.
Fredborg fired an even-par 71 yesterday to force the playoff. Frost was the first round leader, but he faltered yesterday with a 74. The leaders finished at three-over-par in the two day event.
Other locals, Ben Bandura and Scott Borsa finished tied for fourth with Carman's Bruce North. That trio ended their tournament at 6-over-par 148.
MORE CHAMPIONS: Terry More took the Manitoba Men's Rural Senior Golf Championship after carding a 9-over-par 80 yesterday, also at the Selkirk Golf and Country Club.
Selkirk's Keith Fawcett was one stroke back after an 82 yesterday, while Dwight Kearns of Shilo and Al Kehler of Larters finished in a tie for fourth at 14-over-par 165.
BISON REMINDER: Today is the deadline for University of Manitoba students to enter in the Bisons golf team qualifying tournament. The tournament will take place from Aug. 21-23 at the Transcona, Southwood and St. Charles clubs. Entry forms can be downloaded from the Bisons website at www.gobisons.ca.
JUNIOR WEEK: While the summer winding down, only a couple provincial events remain on the Golf Manitoba calendar. The Men's Junior Interclub Championship is set to take place Friday in Winkler, while the Manitoba/Minnesota Matches, which features the top junior golfers in the province, take place next weekend at Pine Ridge.
