BRAGG CREEK -- Perhaps Chris Baryla should go to the track and bet on a longshot because this seems to be his lucky week.

First, the Calgary-born golfer gets into the Nationwide Tour's Alberta Classic at Redwood Meadows after being 10th on the substitutes list. Then, the Canadian Tour regular shows up and gets rewarded with a local caddy, who helps him shoot a 4-under 67 yesterday.

"Kirk," Baryla said of his caddy's name, "and that's all I know. He knew almost everything we needed to know out there. Without him, I would've been three or four shots higher.

"It's easy to make the wrong play when you're guessing at where you're supposed to be hitting it. I lucked out getting him as a caddy and all I know is that he's Kirk from Calgary."

For a time, Baryla had his card as low as 6-under and was in sole possession of first place. However, a bad shot on the par-3 sixth, put him back to 4-under, where he remained.

"It was a bit of a surprise on a course I've never seen," he said. "You're going to hit bad shots, especially on a course you don't know. Bad shots can cost you more than they should if you're not aiming in the right spots and that's probably what happened a couple of times today.

"But I was more than happy. If you'd offer me a 67 this morning with not having seen the course I would have jumped on it."

ZUBACK HURT: Former long drive champion Jason Zuback was forced to withdraw after nine holes yesterday with a possible fracture in his left wrist.

With his ball resting near a tree and just behind a rock on the fifth hole, Zuback asked for relief but was denied by the PGA official following his group.

On the ensuing shot, Zuback smacked the rock with his pitching wedge but also hit a tree root, which stopped his club head from following through.

"It stopped my club dead," said Zuback. "Usually I have a pretty full follow through.

"The rules official said it was designated as embedded, so there was nothing I could really do with it. It's too bad because I wasn't playing that bad but after that I made like three bogeys in a row."

Zuback was taken to the medical clinic for further observation.
