Powell on top

Suffice it to say, Quinn Powell surprised himself a little bit yesterday.

The McCall Lake pro didn't think he was going to win the $28,000 Golf Supply House Alberta Assistants' Championship at Cottonwood Golf and Country Club, yet that's just what he did.

Powell fired a 4-under 67 yesterday for a 137 total, beating Troy Prusky by two shots.

After his round, Powell, who plans on qualifying for next month's Nationwide Tour event at Redwood Meadows, said he didn't think he'd walk away with the $4,250 cheque for first place.

"I didn't think I'd pull it out going into the day but I played well all day, pretty steady," said Powell, who started the final round two shots out of the lead.

TWO TIED AT TOP: Today's final round of the Clarica Ladies Amateur at Wolf Creek golf course outside Ponoka should be a doozy. Defending champion Adrienne White of Red Deer and Sherwood Park's Jil Swenson head out tied for the lead at 9-over after three rounds.

Swenson, who won the 54-hole mid amateur flight, led after the first two rounds but shot a 4-over yesterday, while White fired an even-par 70, best on the day and was pretty pleased.

"It was a pretty consistent round. Actually it's the most consistent I've played all year," said White, a 20-year-old University of Louisville student.

Calgary's Lindsay McMillan is third, five shots back of the leaders.

LECUYER IN LEAD: In the men's amateur at Edmonton's Glendale track, Ryan Lecuyer continues to lead after shooting par 72 yesterday in the second round. The Edmontonian sits at 3-under, with four golfers tied for second at 1-under.
