OTTAWA - Brooke Henderson can be excused for skipping school Thursday.

The 15-year-old Smiths Falls, Ont., golf sensation took serious advantage of the day off, defying the odds to qualify for one of the biggest events in her sport -- the U.S. Women's Open.

Henderson, Canada's top-ranked amateur golfer, shot rounds of 3-under 69 and 5-under 67 to tie for top spot with 2013 NCAA champion Annie Park (USC) at Edgewood Country Club in River Vale, N.J.

By finishing in the top three at the 78-golfer sectional qualifier, Henderson earns a ticket to the U.S. Women's Open -- an LPGA Tour major -- June 27-30 at Sebonack Golf Club on Long Island.
