American Amy Alcott won the 1979 Peter Jackson Classic at the Richelieu Valley Golf Club in Sainte-Julie, Que.

The event was the first year as a major on the LPGA Tour schedule.

Alcott won with a 7-under 285, and it was the first of her five major victories as part of 29 tour triumphs.

After being La Canadienne for six years, the LPGA stop in Canada was renamed the Peter Jackson Classic after a brand of cigarettes produced by Imperial Tobacco, the event sponsor.

It was also the first year as a four-round tournament after a half-dozen years as a three-round event.

Although it was the only time the Richelieu club held the tourney, the PGA's Canadian Open was staged there in both '71 and '73.
