There were a some folks who made a few pounds last year putting a wager on Ernie Els at the British Open.

"I should have probably put money on it -- I thought about it, especially when I was 80-1," said the defender at this year's Open. "But I've never, ever put a cent on myself or another player. I just feel it wouldn't be right to do that.

"But some of my friends obviously backed me. I know some of Ricci's (Roberts, his caddie) friends made a lot of money. They got me at 80-1 and obviously Ricci told them how good I was playing, under the radar, I was coming in. The boys hit it quite big, I know."
