'Tobans fail to crack Canadian Q-school
By KEN WIEBE -- Winnipeg Sun
He didn't pass the final test with flying colours, but at least Jason Hrynkiw will start the 2005 golf season with some status on the Canadian Tour. Hrynkiw, who hails from Dauphin but now resides in Florida, slipped to a three-over 75 yesterday at the Royal Ashburn Golf Club to finish tied for 14th at the Canadian Tour's fall qualifying school. Hrynkiw's four-round total of 293 was 12 shots behind medalist Tom Johnson (74-72-67-68-281), who was seven strokes ahead of his nearest competitor. The Top-10 finishers earned full status on tour for 2005, while the next seven players and ties earned non-exempt status. Mac McLeod of Brandon had a tough final round of 79 and wasn't able to secure playing privileges for the 2005 season. He finished tied for 45th with a four-round total of 306 (74-81-72-79). "I didn't lose too many balls or anything like that," said McLeod, who plays out of Southwood. "I hit the ball well, but I didn't putt very good." McLeod's second round score essentially took him out of the running. "Mentally, I was in a little bit of a fog, I had a tough time focusing on the greens," he said. "I wanted to do so well and I was just going on a streak of missing. It was almost like I was wishing instead of focusing on trying to make it happen." McLeod, who was also unsuccessful at the fall Q-school in 2003, said nerves weren't a factor this time around. "I felt more comfortable and more confident," said McLeod. "I really thought it was going to be less hard because I had been here before but it never is easy." Hrynkiw, who entered the final round tied for seventh place, could not be reached for comment. CHIP SHOTS: Terry More of The Links at Quarry Oaks shot 77 in the third and final round to tie for 45th (20-over) at the Canadian Senior Men's Championship in Brantford, Ont. More was the low Manitoban at the Brantford Golf & Country Club. In the team competition, Manitoba's team of Denis Burns, David Martin, David McLeod and More had a composite score of 497 to leave them ninth. |
