Two pieces of major golf news Tuesday had us thinking about the future and once again looking at the game's biggest question: Can Tiger Woods equal or better Jack Nicklaus' record of 18 major victories?

On the same day Woods announced his withdrawal from one of his favourite events, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, which has yielded him a record eight victories, it was announced that the U.S. Open would in 2021 be returning to Torrey Pines, the site of his most improbable major victory.

Woods cited ongoing back problems in pulling out of Arnie's tournament this week, and the immediate thought was whether he could be ready for the Masters in a few weeks. Tiger is going to play at Augusta even if they have to cart him down Magnolia Lane in a wheelchair, but the question is whether injuries will keep him from being competitive in majors now, and as he tries to run down Nicklaus.
