Ric Flair turned heel last week and it was enough to drive some Carolina Panthers fans over the edge and threaten his life.
The pro wrestling legend – and dirtiest player in the game – gave a pep talk last week to the San Francisco 49ers before their NFC wild card game against the Green Bay Packers.
In his speech, the Charlotte resident said his “heart is with the 49ers.”
Well, the Niners won the game and next face Flair’s hometown Panthers.
Video of the pep talk was posted online and the reaction forced Flair’s representatives to release a statement saying he will not attend the game.
“The 49er pep talk, which instantly went viral, caused many Carolina fans to voice their feelings of anger and betrayal on social media -- some even offering death threats to Flair,” the statement reads.
Panthers players also reacted to the speech, although with much less vitriol.
“As a guy who actually has a Ric Flair robe I’m really disappointed in seeing that,” wide receiver Steve Smith told the Charlotte Observer early this week.
“Really disappointed. I’m not sure if he’ll get the invite here. That Golden Gate Bridge has been burned.”
