Pats-Jets 'arch' rivals

ATLANTA — Wes Welker didn’t end up putting his foot in his mouth when he made all those references to “feet” this week.

Instead, we’re guessing he knew exactly what he was doing.

While the New York Jets have been talking smack almost the entire week leading up to Sunday’s divisional playoff showdown against the hated New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium, the Patriots have taken the high road. Sort of.

When they have fired back, they have been smart and subtle, even humourous about it.

Enter Welker. While discussing the grudge match, the Patriots wide receiver used the words “foot, feet, toe and toes” on 10 different occasions.

He said the Pats have to put their collective “best foot forward.” He said they had to be on “their toes.” He said they would have to go out and be good little “foot soldiers.”

What he didn’t come out and say: All those terms were references to the foot fetish videos and phots of a woman who resembled Ryan’s wife that recently were splashed all over the internet.

He didn’t have to say it. We can connect the dots.

Ryan was asked about Welker’s comments.

“I think with Wes Welker, this is a huge rivalry-type game and anything goes,” Ryan said during his press conference on Friday.

“I can take it. I’m not going to discuss it but I can take it.”

The outspoken Jets coach added that all is fair in love, war and during Patriots week.

“Anything, everything goes this week,” Ryan said. “And that is the way it is.”

Ryan also addressed comments made by former Yankees great Reggie Jackson, who ripped the Jets on ESPN Radio in New York for taking shots at Pats QB Tom Brady.

Ryan’s message to Mr. October: Lend a hand on Sunday!

“We’re gonna always be who we are, just like Reggie Jackson is always who he was,” Ryan said.

“And, you know, we could use Reggie’s bat this week. If he wants to help us out, I’d be happy if that happened.”

If the game turns out to be half as fun as the days leading up to it, it could be a classic.
