FORT LAUDERDALE — All of Bill Cowher’s football analyst buddies are expecting the former Pittsburgh coach to be back on the sidelines for some NFL team in 2011.
Cowher talked briefly this week about earlier discussions he had with the Buffalo Bills.
“I couldn’t make the commitment,” Cowher said. “It wasn’t the right time and place. there weren’t a whole lot of (coaching vacancies) this year and I’ve got a very good job.”
He did admit that the urge to coach still is very strong.
“As each year goes by, you get a little more of the itch,” he said. “I miss working with the players, the competition, the strategizing, bringing a group of men together with one common goal. The journey part of it.
“I’m still all ears but it would take the right situation.”
CBS colleague Shannon Sharpe said Cowher “is looking for a situation where he has a quarterback he feels can give him a legitimate chance.”
During Sunday’s pre-game show, Cowher will air an interview with one of his former players, incarcerated receiver Plaxico Burress, who is serving time on gun charges resulting from his shooting himself in the leg in a nightclub in 2008. He’s scheduled to be released in June 2011.
“You will see a different side of him,” said Cowher, who taped the interview last week at a prison in New York State. “It was very sobering to be there.”
Also on the pre-game show:
n Dan Marino’s interview with Colts QB Peyton Manning.
n Boomer Esiason’s piece on Colts defensive line bookends Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis.
